Asi již od r. 1903 se vždy 16. října slavnostně připomíná Mortonova úspěšná demonstrace éterové anestezie. Nejprve jako Ether Day v Massachusetts General Hospital v americkém Bostonu, kde k ní poprvé došlo. Od konce 20. století ji různé anesteziologické společnosti slavily jako National Anaesthesia Day a od r. 2017 se pod záštitou Světové federace anesteziologických společností (WFSA) slaví jako World Anaesthesia Day [1, 2]. Od Mortonova pokusu uběhne letos kulatých 180 let a je pozoruhodné, jak se rozvinul a jakými změnami prošel náš obor za uvedenou dobu. Toto krátké připomenutí není zaměřeno na přehled nových farmak, přístrojů, metod lokoregionální anestezie apod., ale na samotnou změnu koncepce našeho oboru a na přínos anesteziologie k péči o pacienta....
