Experimentální hodnocení uložení do zotavovací polohy nelékařským personálem: studie variability výkonu
Böhm P., Limpouchová N., Peřan D., Příhoda A.
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2026;37(3):143-148 | DOI: 10.36290/aim.2026.026
Objective: This performance-variability study analyzes the variations and degree of consistency in the application of techniques used by trained non-medical personnel to place a person into the recovery position. The study primarily examines performance variability in adjusting cervical spine rotation and flexion as part of preventive measures. Design, material and methods: An experimental design assessed the ability of the study group to place an unconscious person into the recovery position. A total of 500 participants aged 15 years and older were recruited from health science high schools and universities. Observations focused on body maneuvers...

Perioperative management of patients with sedative addictive substance abuse
Dostálová V., Kulda K., Kulhánková J., Mikl J., Gabrhelík T.
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2026;37(3):149-155 | DOI: 10.36290/aim.2026.023
Sedative addictive substances represent a significant clinical problem in perioperative care because they affect both the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of anesthetics and increase the risk of complications during anesthesia. The most commonly abused substances in this group include benzodiazepines, opioids, and alcohol. Their chronic use leads to the development of tolerance, changes in receptor sensitivity, and potential withdrawal syndrome, which can complicate the induction of anesthesia, maintenance of anesthetic depth, and postoperative analgesia. Acute intoxication, on the other hand, potentiates the effects of anesthetics, increasing...
Airway bleeding - a narrative review and case vignette
Tlapáková K., Černá Pařízková R., Dostál P., Polák J., Chovanec V., Šatánková J., Koblížek V., Dulíček P., Astapenko D.
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2026;37(3):156-161 | DOI: 10.36290/aim.2026.027
Airway bleeding, particularly massive or life‑threatening hemoptysis, represents an emergency associated with high morbidity and mortality. The cornerstone of management is rapid airway management, hemodynamic stabilisation, exclusion of pseudohemoptysis, and early diagnosis of the cause and source of bleeding using imaging and endoscopic methods. The current literature highlights the key role of bronchoscopy, which enables identification of the bleeding source, local hemostatic interventions, clot removal, and lung isolation. Bronchial artery embolisation has become the standard treatment for massive and recurrent hemoptysis of bronchial artery...
Artificial intelligence in anaesthesiology: from development to safe clinical practice, a narrative review
Šoltesová K., Astapenko D.
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2026;37(3):162-171 | DOI: 10.36290/aim.2026.030
Artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly relevant to anaesthesiology; however, a substantial implementation gap persists between the technical development of new tools and their safe adoption in clinical practice. This article provides a practically oriented narrative review of what the anaesthesiologist may encounter today or in the near future across the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of patient care. For each application, its clinical maturity and the principal barriers to direct translation into practice are outlined. The review, therefore, also includes a practical framework for the safe adoption of this new technology...
Shared decision making in intensive care
Zvara M., Rusinová K.
Anest. intenziv. Med. 2026;37(3):172-177 | DOI: 10.36290/aim.2026.034
Shared decision making in intensive care connects medically indicated treatment options with the patient's values, goals, and preferences. It is particularly important when patients lack decision-making capacity and their preferences have not been documented in advance. In such situations, decision making proceeds through patient surrogates and includes goals-of-care discussions, assessment of the appropriateness of life-sustaining treatment, and repeated review of the treatment plan as the clinical condition and prognosis evolve. High-quality shared decision making requires reliable prognostic assessment, verification of understanding, systematic...
